Skulpturensammlung
(Sculpture Collection)

The Skulpturensammlung (Sculpture Collection) presents works of more than five millennia – from the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and the Near East to all epochs of European sculpture from the Early Middle Ages to the present.

The brightest highlight of the permanent exhibition is the world-renowned antique collection. It includes not only Greek and Roman sculpture but also vases, bronzes and terracottas. The numerous plaster casts will be accessible once again after the renovations.

An entire hall is dedicated to masterworks of Renaissance and Baroque sculpture, among them bronze statuettes by Filarete, Giambologna and others, as well as marble sculptures by Balthasar Permoser. The sculptures of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are displayed on the upper level of the Albertinum along with paintings of the same period from the New Masters Gallery. The Medieval-Collection is exhibited at  Albrechtsburg Castle in Meissen.

Once the Green Vault has moved to the Royal Palace in the autumn of 2004, the Sculpture Collection will be able to present a larger proportion of its treasures. The New Albertinum will thus become one of the Dresden State Art Collections’ modern institutions and a setting in which key emphasis will be placed on the dialogue between old art and new.

Because of substantial restructuring and new building of a depository the home of Sculpture Collection - the Albertinum - is closed from January 2006 on. The Sculpture Collection presents the Interim Presentaion "Facets of Modernity. The Changing Image of Man" in the Zwinger (February 13, 2008 to spring 2009).
