Münzkabinett
(Coin Cabinet)
With its inventory of some 300,000 objects, the Münzkabinett (Coin Cabinet) ranks among the major collections of universal character in Europe. In addition to coins and medals, its holdings encompass badges and decorations, banknotes, historical bonds, models, seals, coin and medal dies and coin-making machines and devices.
In view of its substantial holdings covering a wide range of numismatic categories, the Münzkabinett possesses a unique archival character for the historical sciences. Among the many highlights of the collection are the 30,000 Saxon coins and medals representing important epochs in the history of the land, and the many volumes of valuable numismatic literature of the past centuries.
The Münzkabinett comprises a specialised library containing some 30,000 volumes as well as a study hall, both of which are accessible to interested visitors of the Dresden Royal Palace. A comprehensive programme of lectures on various numismatic subjects regularly offers interesting insights into the history of coins, currency and art.
