Residenzschloss Dresden

For several centuries, the Residenzschloss Dresden (Dresden Royal Palace) was not only the seat of government of the Saxon electors and kings, but the heart of the city’s culture as well. Located in the direct vicinity of other major cultural highlights of Dresden, it is an integral part of a district – the Kultur Quartier  – which developed in the course of many centuries and now concentrates wide cultural diversity in a small area.

Following the completion of major restoration measures, various museums of the Dresden State Art Collections are returning to the Royal Palace in a process which represents the continuation of its rich cultural past. Since 2004, for example, visitors can once again experience the Grünes Gewölbe as a Baroque synthesis of the arts in its original quarters. The Kupferstich-Kabinett has already occupied its spacious home in the palace – also its place of origin – since April 2004. The faithful replication of the audience chamber and other magnificent rooms of August the Strong is just one more of the palace’s many attractions.

The Dresden Royal Palace is also introducing new accents to art and art scholarship. The opening of the Art Library (in February 2004) and the special Coin Cabinet library are only a foretaste of the Dresden State Art Collections’ new emphasis on education and research in their scientific work.
